How I Get Past Creative Blocks as a Designer

Creative blocks happen to all of us. Whether you’re a designer, business owner, or someone building a brand, there are times when ideas just don’t flow the way they usually do. You might find yourself second-guessing everything — changing your logo multiple times, questioning your color palette, or becoming your own harshest critic. The truth is, creativity isn’t something that disappears forever when you feel stuck. Sometimes it just needs a reset. Here are a few things that have helped me push through creative blocks and stay connected to the creative process.

Maintain Balance in Your Life

Creativity thrives when your life has balance. If you’re constantly prioritizing work over everything else, it becomes easy to burn out mentally and creatively. As creatives, we need time for more than just designing or building our businesses.

Make space for:

  • Work

  • Personal time

  • Hobbies

  • Fitness

  • Your mental health

Even if it’s just 20 minutes to yourself, taking that time can make a difference. When your life is balanced, your creativity has room to breathe instead of feeling forced.

Stop Searching and Create

A lot of us fall into the trap of constantly searching for inspiration. Scrolling Pinterest, browsing design sites, looking at what everyone else is doing, it can feel productive, but sometimes it does the opposite. Too much inspiration can actually overwhelm your creative thinking. Sometimes the best thing you can do is stop searching. Open a blank canvas and let your own ideas lead the way. Allow your mind and creativity to do the work without comparing it to what others have already created. Your best ideas often come when you trust your own instincts.

If You Never Look for Inspiration, Start Exploring

On the other hand, if you’re someone who rarely looks at outside inspiration, doing the opposite can help.Creativity grows when we expose ourselves to different styles, ideas, and perspectives. Seeing how others approach design, branding, or storytelling can spark new ideas and help you evolve as a creative. Growth happens when we experiment and try new things.

Use Music to Reset Your Mind

When I feel stuck creatively, music helps me reset. Whether it’s been a stressful day or I’m just feeling exhausted, music can shift my mindset. It can calm frustration, create focus, or give you the energy you need to keep going when you feel like stopping. Sometimes the right song can help you reconnect with the creative flow you thought you lost.

Take a Real Break

One of the biggest mistakes creatives make is trying to force creativity. If you’ve been designing nonstop, creating constantly, and pushing yourself without pause, sometimes the best solution is to step away completely.Take a day off. Take a weekend. Sometimes even a week or two away from your work can reset your perspective. Creativity needs space. When you give yourself that space, you often return with fresh ideas and a clearer mindset.

Creativity Always Comes Back

Creative blocks can feel frustrating in the moment, but they’re a normal part of the creative process.

The key is learning how to reset your mind, take care of yourself, and give your creativity the environment it needs to grow.

When you do that, you’ll find that inspiration doesn’t disappear — it just waits for the right moment to come back!
